The Sound of Sonny
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Sound of Sonny was released in 1957 and was the first album Sonny Rollins recorded for the Riverside label. That year he began working for several labels, which at the time was almost considered sacrilege. Playing with him were pianist Sonny Clark, drummer Roy Haynes and bassist Percy Heath or Paul Chambers. Orrin Keepnews was the producer.
According to the AllMusic reviewer Lindsay Planer, a new phase began in the saxophonist's career in 1957. He was playing at his best: Down Beat declared him New Star among tenor saxophonists in the critics' poll. On the record you hear, according to Planer, the fluent solos and new melodic high points, and a new freedom, including in the line-up. The bassist changes from track to track, and on a few tracks the piano or the drums do not play.
