Souvlaki
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Souvlaki came about after the relationship between the singers and guitarists Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead had ended. Halstead increasingly wrote alone. In 1992 the band, touring, was already working on some forty possible songs, but label boss Alan McGee rejected them. Brian Eno refused to produce the album, but did record for a few days with the group, which yielded Sing and Here She Comes. In the summer Halstead withdrew to a rented cottage in Wales and wrote more personal songs there, such as Dagger. Ed Buller mixed the record.
The album was released in June 1993 on Creation Records and received a cool reception, at a time when the press had more eye for Britpop than for shoegaze. Later critics praise it as a classic of the genre, and Pitchfork made a documentary about it in 2015. Halstead names Aphex Twin, dub music and early drum and bass as influences on Souvlaki Space Station.
