The Hot Rock

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Hot Rock is the fourth album by Sleater-Kinney and came out on 23 February 1999 on Kill Rock Stars. Major labels offered contracts after Dig Me Out, but the band stayed with the small label. For the first time they worked not with John Goodmanson but with producer Roger Moutenot, in July 1998 in Seattle. They had spent a year writing the songs.

The sound became calmer and gloomier than the raw punk of the earlier records, and the lyrics deal with failed relationships and insecurity. Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein interweave their voices and guitars, for example in The End of You and Burn, Don't Freeze. Get Up was released as a single. The reviews were positive, and it was the first album by the band to reach the American charts.

Listening tip. Listen to The End of You and notice how the two voices and the guitars circle around each other: who leads when?
