All Hands on the Bad One
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
All Hands on the Bad One is the fifth album by Sleater-Kinney, released on 2 May 2000 on Kill Rock Stars. After the sombre The Hot Rock, the band did not want to fuss over the sound. According to Corin Tucker, the songs came about spontaneously, one by one. John Goodmanson, who had also produced Dig Me Out, recorded it because he could capture the live sound well. Drummer Janet Weiss sang along for the first time.
The music ranges from soft melodies to fast punk guitars. The lyrics deal with women in rock, morality, eating disorders, feminism and music journalism. The Ballad of a Ladyman mocks how people see women in a band. The reviews were very positive: critics praised the consistency and Tucker's vocals, and the album appeared on end-of-year lists.
