On 7 February 1970 Venus by the Hague band Shocking Blue was at number one in America, the first Dutch number one there. Guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen wrote it, and Mariska Veres sang. But what is Dutch about Venus? Not the language, nor the style: only the musicians and the city. To an American listener it was simply a pop song. That question runs through the whole history of Nederpop.
