Back From Hell
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Back From Hell · Back from Hell was released on 16 October 1990 on Profile Records and is Run-D.M.C.'s fifth album. The group produced it themselves, in a difficult time. Jam Master Jay had tax debts, Run was struggling with severe depression and DMC drank heavily to keep his stage fright in check. Their popularity had fallen considerably, especially in comparison with West Coast rappers.
The album took on a rawer, more street-oriented tone, with more coarse language and fewer rock influences. Faces and Pause brought a new style to the group, new jack swing. On Don't Stop, Aaron Hall sings, and Jam Master Jay raps himself for the first time. The criticism was mixed: Rolling Stone did not find the lyrics convincing, but praised Jay's music, which layers samples on samples without overdoing it.
