Profile

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Profile is an album by the Dutch guitarist Jan Akkerman. It opens with Fresh Air, a piece of almost twenty minutes consisting of seven parts. A series of short tracks follows, from a minute and a half to just over four minutes.

Akkerman plays guitar and bass and is accompanied by the bassist Bert Ruiter and the drummer Pierre van der Linden. On the last track, Stick, the pianist Ferry Maat, the bassist Jaap van Eik and the drummer Frans Smit play along. The choice of repertoire is remarkable: alongside original work there are pieces by Matteo Carcassi and Anton Diabelli, plus the anonymous dance Kemp's Jig. In this way classical guitar music stands beside a long jazz composition.

Listening

Listening tip. In Fresh Air, listen to how a piece of almost twenty minutes is built from seven parts: notice the moments at which the music changes character.
