Smiler
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Smiler is Rod Stewart's fifth solo album and was released on 27 September 1974. It came out on Mercury Records, after a five-month delay caused by legal problems between Mercury and Warner Bros. The album reached number 1 on the British album chart and number 13 on the American.
Members of the Faces and regular collaborators such as Martin Quittenton, Pete Sears and Mickey Waller play on the record. It contains covers of Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke and Bob Dylan. There is also a duet with Elton John on John's song Let Me Be Your Car, and a version of Carole King's (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Man, in which Woman has been changed to Man. The single Farewell, which he wrote together with Quittenton, reached the British top ten. In the United States the B-side Mine for Me, written by Paul and Linda McCartney, became a minor hit.
