Piano Vibrations

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Piano Vibrations was the debut of the English keyboardist Rick Wakeman, released in 1971 by Polydor. At that time he was a session musician and also played with the folk rock group Strawbs. The recording went at lightning speed: four sessions, for which he received 36 pounds in total.

It is not a record of original work. He plays covers of pop, jazz and folk on a grand piano, with the orchestra of John Schroeder and a singer who is known only as Chris. Neither his name nor that of the singer appears on the cover. The album presents a keyboardist at the start of his career, long before the great concept records that would make him famous.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Your Song and notice how the grand piano carries the melody while John Schroeder's orchestra plays around it.
