No Earthly Connection
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
No Earthly Connection · After his world tour in late 1975, Rick Wakeman retreated in January 1976 to Hérouville in France. There he recorded a new album with his band, the English Rock Ensemble. The previous two concept albums had been expensive because of the orchestra and the choir, and A&M let it be known that this could no longer continue. He wrote much of the music during flights, inspired by a UFO that he claimed to have seen above his beach house in Miami.
It became a more serious album, without the jokes of his earlier work. He described it as partly invented, partly true: a musical autobiography about the soul, reincarnation, evolution and flying saucers. Music Reincarnate filled the whole of the first side and part of the second. The label wanted to make cuts, but he refused. The rest of side two contains The Prisoner and The Lost Cycle. The album reached number nine in England and came with a mirrored sheet for viewing the distorted cover the right way up.
