Alarm Clock

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Alarm Clock was released in 1971 on Stormy Forest and is the Richie Havens album that achieved the highest chart position: number 29 on the Billboard Top 200 in the United States. He wrote most of the songs together with Mark Roth. The record opens with a live cover of Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles, which on its own reached number 16.

On the nine tracks, Paul Williams plays lead guitar, while Havens himself sings and plays guitar, and on a few songs percussion and piano. Rick Derringer plays electric guitar on To Give All Your Love Away, and Bill Shepherd wrote the string arrangement for End of the Seasons. The title track closes the record and lasts well over seven minutes.

Listening tip. Listen to Here Comes the Sun and notice how a Beatles song acquires a character all its own here, with guitar, congas and steel guitar.
