Californication
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Californication · Guitarist John Frusciante had left the group after Blood Sugar Sex Magik and had fallen into drugs. In 1998 he returned after a spell in rehab, at the urging of bassist Flea. The new songs took shape that summer in Flea's garage studio. Frusciante had to get used to playing together again and opted for a minimalist guitar style. The recording at Cello Studios in Los Angeles took just over three weeks, with Rick Rubin as producer. All four members played at the same time in the same room, with few overdubs.
The record was released on 8 June 1999 and sounds more melodic and softer than its predecessors. Alongside the familiar sexual innuendo, the lyrics deal with death, California, drugs and travel. Rolling Stone found the album more spiritual than earlier work. Otherside, the title track and Scar Tissue, which won a Grammy, became hits. It became the group's most commercially successful studio album.
