Blood Sugar Sex Magik · After Mother's Milk the band wanted to get away from producer Michael Beinhorn, and after a move from EMI to Warner Bros. they chose Rick Rubin. He suggested recording in a villa in Los Angeles where Harry Houdini was said to have lived. The members worked in that house for more than thirty days, and Anthony Kiedis recorded his vocals in his own room. The sessions were filmed for Funky Monks.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers kept their mix of punk and funk, but made more melodic songs, with less distortion and fewer metal guitar riffs. Flea deliberately played more simply and used less slap technique. Give It Away arose from a jam, and Under the Bridge began as a poem by Kiedis about a low point in his life. The record received widespread praise and made the group world famous. Guitarist John Frusciante could not cope with the fame and quit during the 1992 tour.
