The Nearness of You

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Nearness of You is an album by the American pianist Red Garland, subtitled ballads played by Red Garland. He recorded it in 1961, and it was released in 1962 on the label Jazzland. Garland plays in a trio, with Larry Ridley on bass and Frank Gant on drums. Only in Lush Life, the piece by Billy Strayhorn, does he play entirely alone.

The repertoire consists of eight well-known songs by, among others, Hoagy Carmichael, Jerome Kern, Duke Ellington and Irving Berlin. The title thus refers to the song by Carmichael and Ned Washington, which is second on the record. AllMusic gave the album three stars and wrote that it works mainly as background music.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Lush Life, where Garland plays alone, and notice how he lets the melody ring out without bass and drums.
