Wade in the Water
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Wade in the Water · Ramsey Lewis released this album in 1966 on Cadet Records. It followed The In Crowd, and according to one reviewer this record, too, unmistakably evokes the time in which it was made. Lewis plays keyboards, Cleveland Eaton bass and Maurice White drums. Richard Evans wrote the arrangements and conducted. Bob Kidder and Bruce Swedien recorded the record.
The repertoire is a mixture of a traditional, soul numbers such as Ain't That Peculiar and Uptight, a pop song by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and even Day Tripper by The Beatles. The opening track Wade in the Water became a successful single. Hold It Right There won a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm and Blues Performance by a Group, Vocal or Instrumental. The album climbed high in the Billboard charts.
