Ramones

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Ramones · The debut of this New York punk band came about after Hit Parader editor Lisa Robinson saw them play in 1975 and started writing about them. She asked Danny Fields to become their manager, and producer Craig Leon managed to persuade Sire president Seymour Stein. In January 1976 they recorded the album at Plaza Sound, in a week and for 6,400 dollars. Three days for the instruments and four for the vocals were enough.

The songs are short and lightning fast: many of them go well above 160 beats per minute, and the longest lasts two and a half minutes. The record opens with Blitzkrieg Bop. The lyrics deal with violence, drugs, relationships, humour and Nazism. Commercially the record was not a success, but the reviews were glowing. The songs later came to be regarded as one of the most influential punk records, with an influence on grunge and heavy metal.
