Trompe le Monde
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Trompe le Monde · The band recorded this fourth album in Burbank, Paris and London, with producer Gil Norton. It was Pixies' last record before the band split up two years later, and the last with founder and bassist Kim Deal. The title comes from the opening track and means Fool the World. It is a pun on trompe-l'oeil, the painting technique with which a painter makes the viewer believe that painted objects are real.
The sound leans towards heavier, metal-like guitars, especially in Planet of Sound, Trompe le Monde, Space (I Believe In) and Subbacultcha. Head On is a cover of The Jesus and Mary Chain and became a single. U-Mass is about the university where Black Francis and Joey Santiago met. One reviewer later wrote that Kim Deal had a smaller role and that the album was almost a Black Francis solo record.
