Kim Deal

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Kim Deal is an American singer and rock musician, born in 1961 in Dayton, Ohio. She grew up with hard rock such as AC/DC and Led Zeppelin and as a teenager formed a folk-rock band with her twin sister Kelley. She kept writing, sometimes a hundred songs in a few years. She studied at seven different colleges but never finished any of them, and worked in a hospital laboratory before music took hold of her.

Music and breakthrough

In January 1986 she joined the Pixies, as bassist and second voice, under the name Mrs. John Murphy on Come on Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa. After Doolittle and a break she founded the Breeders, with Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses, Josephine Wiggs and Britt Walford of Slint. The debut was Pod. Kelley then joined the band. In 1993 Last Splash went platinum, with the hit single Cannonball. In 1995, under the name Tammy Ampersand, she made the album Pacer with the Amps. Title TK (2002) and Mountain Battles (2008) followed later.

Influence

In 2004 she rejoined the Pixies and left the band in 2013 to concentrate on the Breeders. In 2018 the album All Nerve appeared, the first since Last Splash with the same line-up. In 2024 she released her first solo album, Nobody Loves You More. Deal is an important voice in alternative rock, as a woman in a band that influenced many other groups.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Cannonball by the Breeders. Notice the thudding bass line, the almost whispered vocals and how the silence between the guitar strokes builds tension.
