Doolittle

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

After Surfer Rosa in 1988, the band toured Europe and were enthusiastically received there. They had already played songs for the second album on John Peel's radio programme. For Doolittle the label 4AD chose Gil Norton as producer. Recording began on 31 October 1988 at Downtown Recorders in Boston, with a budget of 40,000 dollars, four times as much as for the debut. Norton set to work on short, raw songs, slowing some down and letting others run longer. He refined the sound with compression and reverb on the guitars.

Black Francis wrote lyrics with surreal imagery, biblical violence and torture. The album is known for the interplay between quiet verses with Kim Deal's bass and loud, distorted guitars. Kurt Cobain said that Smells Like Teen Spirit was strongly influenced by that sound. Melody Maker and Sounds named it album of the year.

Listening

Listening tip. In Debaser, listen to the difference between the soft and the loud parts. Notice the bass and the distorted guitars.
