Journey to the One
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Journey to the One is a double album by the saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, recorded in 1979 and released on the label Theresa. He plays tenor saxophone and is accompanied by, among others, pianist John Hicks, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Idris Muhammad. On a few tracks sitar, koto, tabla and synthesizer are also heard, and Bobby McFerrin and Vicki Randle, among others, sing along.
The repertoire includes his own pieces such as Greetings to Idris and Doktor Pitt, but also After the Rain by John Coltrane and an arrangement of a standard. Critics heard the leader constantly alternating between soft, spiritual passages and fierce outbursts. Chris May called the album the record that introduced a new generation of dance-floor enthusiasts to the saxophonist.
