After the Rain

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After the Rain was released in 1969 as Muddy Waters's sixth studio album and is the follow-up to Electric Mud from the year before. Many of the same musicians played on it, including Phil Upchurch, Pete Cosey, Charles Stepney, Louis Satterfield and Morris Jennings. Marshall Chess, Stepney and Gene Barge produced the record.

Unlike its predecessor, it consists mainly of the singer's own songs, and his own guitar playing comes clearly to the fore again. The music remains distorted, but is less emphatically psychedelic. Bottom of the Sea appears only on this album. Commercially the record did worse than Electric Mud and it did not enter the Billboard 200. An AllMusic reviewer felt that it sounded more as you would expect from him, and a later review called the second half solid Chicago blues with slide guitar.
