Mama Africa

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Mama Africa by the Jamaican musician Peter Tosh was released in 1983. The album contains nine tracks, almost all by Tosh himself. Johnny B. Goode is an adaptation of the Chuck Berry song, for which a video was made. Where You Gonna Run is by Donald Kinsey. A large group of musicians played on it, including the rhythm section Robbie Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar and The Tamlins as backing singers. Chris Kimsey and Tosh mixed the record.

Mama Africa reached number 59 on the American Billboard 200, the highest of all Tosh's albums there. He also toured North America with it. Critics found the album uneven. The New York Times wrote that his raw baritone sometimes expressed little, but that on Glasshouse he showed intensity and a preacher's sense of timing.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Glass House and notice Tosh's voice. Hear how he delivers the lyrics with emphasis and timing, like a preacher.
