From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Us · After the soundtrack Passion, Peter Gabriel began work on new songs in October 1989, his first since So. He wrote about personal themes: his divorce, his later relationship with Rosanna Arquette and the growing distance from his eldest daughter. From 1991 to June 1992 he recorded, mostly at his own Real World Studios in Wiltshire, with Daniel Lanois as co-producer. Studio sessions in New Orleans and Dakar added extra colour. At almost 58 minutes, the album is much longer than his earlier records.

Many songs begin with a rhythm pattern. Come Talk to Me, about a breakdown in communication with a daughter, is built on a groove by the Senegalese drummer Doudou N'Diaye Rose and uses bagpipes, a duduk and a Russian choir. Sinéad O'Connor sang on Come Talk to Me and Blood of Eden. The album reached number 2 in Great Britain and in America.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Come Talk to Me and try to tell the different sounds apart: the African groove, the bagpipes, the duduk and the choir.
