Ten

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The foundations of Ten lie in Seattle. After the break-up of Mother Love Bone in 1990, bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard began playing with guitarist Mike McCready. They recorded a demo tape of instrumental songs. It ended up with Eddie Vedder in San Diego, who wrote lyrics and melodies for it. In Seattle he wrote eleven songs with the band in a week and became the singer. In March 1991 came the recording sessions at London Bridge Studios, with producer Rick Parashar. It took only a month.

The album was released on 27 August 1991 on Epic Records. It sounds anthemic and has more classic rock influence than other grunge. The lyrics deal with depression, suicide and loneliness. Jeremy is based on a true story. The album was not an instant success, but reached number two in America at the end of 1992. It is seen as a record that helped the rise of alternative rock in the 1990s.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Jeremy and notice the contrast between the swelling music and the heavy subject of the lyrics. The story comes from a real incident at a school.
