First Place Again

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

First Place Again is alto saxophonist Paul Desmond's second album under his own name. He recorded it in September 1959 for Warner Bros. It was the first of five studio albums with quartets featuring guitarist Jim Hall and drummer Connie Kay. Bassist Percy Heath, Kay's colleague from the Modern Jazz Quartet, completed the quartet. In August, Hall, Heath and Kay had been teachers at the Lenox School of Jazz. In that same month the saxophonist finished recording Time Out with the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

AllMusic gave the album three and a half stars. The reviewer heard a saxophonist in good form, with an erratic, breathy and dry tone and many quotations from other melodies. A relaxed and pleasant record, though in the end, he felt, it does not stick.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to I Get a Kick Out of You, the longest piece, and notice the dry, breathy tone of the alto saxophone.
