Desmond Blue

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Desmond Blue was released in 1962 and was alto saxophonist Paul Desmond's first album for RCA Victor. George Avakian produced it. He had worked with the saxophonist at Columbia, when Desmond was still playing in the Dave Brubeck Quartet, and brought him to RCA Victor in 1960. Avakian produced all six albums that Desmond made there as a leader. It was also the first solo album on which the saxophonist plays with an orchestra: woodwinds, horn, harp and a string section conducted by Bob Prince. The recordings were made at Webster Hall in New York, in September and October 1961.

AllMusic gave the album four stars and described the atmosphere as lush, reflective and moving.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to My Funny Valentine and notice how the alto saxophone relates to the horn, the woodwinds and the harp around it.
