Organisation

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Organisation was released on 24 October 1980 on Dindisc and was the second album by the English band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. For the first time the group worked with a producer, Mike Howlett, the former bassist of Gong. Malcolm Holmes became the regular drummer. Most of the songs came about in June and July 1980. The basic tracks were recorded in their own studio in Liverpool, the vocals and extra instruments at Ridge Farm in Rusper.

The tone is darker and more melancholy than on other records by the group. During the writing, Ian Curtis of Joy Division died, and Statues is partly inspired by him. Enola Gay was the only single and reached number 8. The album reached number 6, their first top-10 album in the United Kingdom, and received favourable reviews.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the beginning of Stanlow: the rhythm opens with the sound of a diesel pump from the refinery where Andy McCluskey's father worked.
