Khmer

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Khmer by the Norwegian trumpeter, composer and producer Nils Petter Molvær was recorded between 1996 and 1997 and released in 1998 on ECM. The album relies on sampled and artificially created sounds, with house and drum 'n' bass beats underneath. The often slow rhythms are nevertheless played on an acoustic drum kit. He himself plays trumpet, bass and sampler. Others heard include drummer Rune Arnesen and guitarist Eivind Aarset. Manfred Eicher and Ulf Holand produced the record.

The AllMusic reviewer gave it four and a half stars and called it perhaps the most unusual album ECM ever released, because of the then unprecedented mix of jazz and electronics.

Listening

Listening tip. In Khmer, listen to how the trumpet blends with samples and acoustic drums.
