Solid Ether

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Solid Ether is an album by the Norwegian trumpeter, composer and producer Nils Petter Molvær. He recorded it in 1999, and ECM released it in May of the following year. On the record he plays not only the trumpet but also the piccolo trumpet and the electronic trumpet. He also uses synthesizer, loops, sampler, effects and beats. Guitarist Eivind Aarset, bassist Audun Erlien, drummers Rune Arnesen and Per Lindvall, DJ Strangefruit and singer Sidsel Endresen also play.

The press was enthusiastic. Chris M. Slawecki of All About Jazz spoke of a stunning fusion of classic jazz trumpet styles with techno, drum and bass and electronic music. David R. Adler wrote on AllMusic that not everyone will understand such music, but that it is a seismic shift that has only just begun. Robert Christgau gave it an A and wrote that he dives into chaos and comes out beautifully.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Solid Ether and notice how the trumpet sounds among beats and electronic sounds. What kind of sound does the trumpet make in this environment?
