Wild God

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Wild God · Nick Cave began the songs on New Year's Day 2023 and recorded them with Warren Ellis at Soundtree in London and at Miraval Studios in France. The first sessions, with only piano and synthesizer, sounded too bare. So the whole band came in, for the first time since Skeleton Tree from 2016. Radiohead's bassist Colin Greenwood also played. The 2022 European tour had given the group renewed enjoyment and a chaotic energy. Drummer Thomas Wydler called it perhaps the first real rock record he had played on.

The album sounds full, vital and joyful, unlike its dark predecessors. The title came from three song titles: Conversion was too religious, Joy could be misunderstood, so it became Wild God. Critics and public responded positively. The album was nominated for two Grammys, including Best Alternative Music Album.

Listening

Listening tip. In Frogs, listen to the simple guitar line. Guitarist George Vjestica played it in one take, inspired by Wichita Lineman by Glen Campbell.
