Skeleton Tree
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Skeleton Tree followed Push the Sky Away and was recorded between late 2014 and early 2016 in Brighton, at La Frette near Paris and at Air Studios in London. Nick Cave, Warren Ellis and Nick Launay produced it. On 15 July 2015, towards the end of the sessions, Cave's fifteen-year-old son Arthur died after a fall. Most of the material had already been written by then, but Cave adjusted lyrics afterwards. By his own account he had lost faith in narrative songs, so the lyrics are partly improvised and almost never directly about the event.
The sound is bare and less polished, with synthesizers, drum machines and loops. Dissonances, drones and song structures without verse and chorus give the album an avant-garde character. At its release the documentary One More Time with Feeling by Andrew Dominik appeared, intended to explain the context without interviews. Both received wide praise. The opening lines of Jesus Alone were seen in hindsight as prophetic.
