Push the Sky Away

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Push the Sky Away was recorded at La Fabrique, a studio in a nineteenth-century country house near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in France, with producer Nick Launay. It is the first album without founder Mick Harvey, who left in 2009, and the first since 1986 with Barry Adamson. The band entered the studio when Nick Cave had only half-developed ideas. The lyrics came about over a year in a notebook, partly by searching the internet for odd facts and Wikipedia articles. Cave said that the songs show how the internet influences events, fashions and absurdities.

Cave called the album a ghost baby in the incubator, with Warren Ellis's loops as a small, trembling heart. That fits the subdued atmosphere. We Real Cool even names Wikipedia, and Jubilee Street was released as a single. Billboard spoke of the band's commercial breakthrough: the album was number one in Australia and six other countries.
