Neu! ’75

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Neu! ’75 · This third album by the German krautrock duo came about after a break of several years, during which Michael Rother worked with Cluster in Harmonia. The musical wishes of Rother and Klaus Dinger had grown apart: Rother loved ambient, Dinger wanted a rougher rock sound. They resolved it by taking one side of the record each. The recording ran from December 1974 to January 1975 in Conny Plank's studio.

The first side, Rother's work, was recorded as a duo and sounds calm and floating. On the second side Dinger plays guitar and sings, while Thomas Dinger and Hans Lampe drum together. Hero is regarded as an example of protopunk and inspired John Lydon of the Sex Pistols, among others. David Bowie referred to it with the title of his album Heroes. In 1979 the NME reviewer Andy Gill gave the record the highest score.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Hero and notice the double drums and Dinger's raw vocals, which drive the pulsating rhythm section onward.
