Ragged Glory
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Ragged Glory is Neil Young's twentieth studio album and his sixth with the band Crazy Horse. It was released in September 1990 on Reprise. The recording took place in April 1990 at Young's Broken Arrow Ranch. For two weeks the band played a set of songs twice a day, then listened back and chose the best takes. According to Young, that took the analysis out of the sessions and the group did not have to think.
The record returns to the heavy rock of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and Zuma, with long guitar jams: two songs last longer than ten minutes. Country Home and White Line date from the mid-1970s. Farmer John is a cover that came about spontaneously during the work. A Rolling Stone reviewer called the album a monument to the spirit of the garage, to passion over precision. Christgau spoke of an atavistic garage stomp.
