Under Construction

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Under Construction is Missy Elliott's fourth studio album and was released on 12 November 2002 on Elektra Records. Producer Timbaland was responsible for most of the music, with additional work by, among others, Craig Brockman, Nisan Stewart and Errol McCalla. Elliott dedicated the album to Aaliyah, who died in August 2001, and to the victims of the attacks of 11 September.

The album looks back at old-school hip hop and sends it through a futuristic sound. Work It was the first single and reached number 2 on the US Hot 100. Gossip Folks followed as the second single. Critics praised the abrasive rhythms and the playful, often daring lyrics. Under Construction received Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Album of the Year and appears in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Work It and notice how bare and rhythmic the production is, and how Elliott plays the beat with her voice.
