The Voice of Africa

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Voice of Africa is the South African singer's fourth album, released in 1964 by RCA Victor. It reached number 122 on the American album chart. The record has twelve short tracks, each lasting between one and three minutes. She wrote Uyadela and Mamoriri herself, Nomthini with Alan Salinga and Qhude with Hugh Masekela, who on the album also plays trumpet, arranges and conducts.

There are also songs by other writers, such as Langa More by Zeph Nkabinde, Willow Song by Giuseppe Verdi and Le Fleuve. The accompaniment consists of three guitarists, a bassist, a drummer, an alto saxophonist and a trombonist. The album thus consists of short songs with a small band.

Listening tip. Listen to Qhude and notice her voice and what the band does around it, in a song of less than three minutes.
