An Evening With Belafonte/Makeba

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

An Evening With Belafonte/Makeba · Despite the title, An Evening with Belafonte/Makeba is not a live record but a studio album, released in 1965 by RCA Victor. In those years Harry Belafonte supported African artists and wanted to make African music known worldwide. Of the twelve tracks, he sings five, Miriam Makeba five, and they sing two together. The songs are in Xhosa, Zulu and other African languages.

Many of the songs are about the position of black South Africans under apartheid. Beware, Verwoerd! targets Hendrik Verwoerd, and To Those We Love names political prisoners such as Nelson Mandela. The album won a Grammy, sold well and made the singer better known in the United States. AllMusic called it a powerful album of traditional South African music.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Beware, Verwoerd! and notice the singing: what can you hear of the tone of a protest song, even if you do not understand the language?
