Ommadawn

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Ommadawn · After Tubular Bells and Hergest Ridge, which was received more negatively, Mike Oldfield wanted to prove that he was more than a one-off success. He had his label install a twenty-four-track studio in his house The Beacon near Kington, where he recorded from January to September 1975. Shortly after the start his mother died. Later the recording tape came loose, forcing him to begin his first side again. The album is one composition in two parts. The Manor in Oxfordshire was used for the African drums. Part Two ends with On Horseback, a song about riding along Hergest Ridge. The title comes from an Irish phrase written down by Clodagh Simonds, in which the word idiot occurs.

The album reached number four in England and went gold within two months. One critic later praised the space that each of the themes is given.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Ommadawn, Pt. 1 and notice the two themes at the beginning: how are they given all the room to be heard, without being developed straight away?
