Metallica
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Metallica, known as The Black Album, is the fifth album by the band of the same name and was released in August 1991 on Elektra. James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich wrote the songs in two months in 1990. As producer the band chose Bob Rock, whose work for Mötley Crüe had made an impression. Recording took eight months, mainly at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles, and often ended in arguments with Rock. He had the group play more as a unit and sought a live feel.
The sound became slower, heavier and more polished than on the thrash metal records before it, although traces of thrash remained. Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, Wherever I May Roam and Sad but True were released as singles. The album received wide praise, spent four weeks at number 1 on the American chart and became the band's best-selling album, with more than thirty million copies worldwide.
