Master of Puppets

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning, Metallica wanted to make an album that would win over critics and fans. The group recorded Master of Puppets from September to December 1985 at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, with producer Flemming Rasmussen. The musicians deliberately chose against the slick production and the synthesizers of glam metal and stayed sober on recording days. The sleeve shows a graveyard full of crosses on strings, moved by two hands.

The album was released on 3 March 1986 on Elektra Records. Instead of a single or video, an American tour with Ozzy Osbourne followed. During it, bassist Cliff Burton died on 27 September 1986 in a bus accident in Sweden. Critics praised the music and the political lyrics. The album is regarded as one of the most influential metal records and as the record that consolidated American thrash metal. In 2015 the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry, the first metal album to be included.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Battery and notice how the acoustic opening turns into a fast, hard guitar part. See whether you can hear how tightly the band locks the riffs together.
