Prose Combat

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Prose Combat is the second studio album by the French rapper MC Solaar. It was released in 1994 on Cohiba Records and brought him international fame. Jimmy Jay handled production and scratching, Boom Bass scratching and sampling, and bassist Laurent Vernerey played on it. A track left over from the sessions, Comme dans un film, later ended up on the album of music inspired by the film La Haine.

The album opens with Aubade, a piece of less than a minute. Nouveau western is built on a sample of Bonnie and Clyde by Serge Gainsbourg, who is also credited as a writer. The British release has a different track listing: three tracks were replaced and the order was changed.

Listening

Listening tip. In Nouveau western, listen to the sample of Bonnie and Clyde by Serge Gainsbourg and notice how the rap sits against it.
