Post Card

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Post Card · In 1968 Mary Hopkin appeared on the TV programme Opportunity Knocks. Twiggy saw her and pointed her out to Paul McCartney, who signed her to Apple Records, the Beatles' label. After the worldwide hit Those Were the Days, they made her debut album together, recorded from October to early December 1968 at EMI Studios, among other places. It was released in February 1969 and reached number 3 in the United Kingdom.

The album features old showtunes such as Lullaby of the Leaves and Someone to Watch Over Me, favourites of McCartney's father. Hopkin herself felt that some songs were too mature for her voice. Three songs were written by Donovan, who also plays acoustic guitar: Lord of the Reedy River, Voyage of the Moon and Happiness Runs. Harry Nilsson wrote The Puppy Song. She sings in Welsh in Y Blodyn Gwyn and in French in Prince en Avignon. The sleeve shows a photograph by Linda Eastman.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Lord of the Reedy River and notice how Hopkin's clear voice sounds above Donovan's acoustic guitar.
