Earth Song / Ocean Song

Earth Song / Ocean Song · Mary Hopkin had had enough of the pop songs that had made her famous. In 1971 she asked producer Tony Visconti, known for an album by the Strawbs, for an acoustic album with strings. Visconti brought in folk musicians: Dave Cousins, Ralph McTell and Danny Thompson. Recording began in May 1971 at AIR Studios in London. It was her second album, more than two years after Post Card.
Hopkin chose her songs from some two hundred titles. There are two songs by McTell on it, including Streets of London, as well as The Wind by Cat Stevens and How Come the Sun by Tom Paxton. Visconti wanted to use modern techniques for a super-folk sound. The reviews were glowing, but the album was not a commercial success, partly because Hopkin could not promote it owing to her summer shows. It was her last album for eighteen years.
