Script for a Jester’s Tear
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Script for a Jester’s Tear · Marillion released their debut album on 14 March 1983 on EMI. Recording ran from December 1982 to February 1983 at Marquee Studios in London. Producer David Hitchcock was injured in a car accident after the single Market Square Heroes, whereupon EMI persuaded the band to work with Nick Tauber, who was seen as more modern. Fish wrote all the lyrics. It was the only studio album with founder and drummer Mick Pointer. Mark Wilkinson designed the sleeve.
The album produced two British hits, He Knows You Know and Garden Party, and reached number 7 on the UK album chart. Dave Dickson of Kerrang! thought it very impressive as a debut, and Prog Magazine places it at number 40 on its list of the hundred best prog albums. Fish and guitarist Steve Rothery both speak critically of it later: Fish about his forced singing, Rothery about his guitar sound.
