Real Life
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Real Life is the debut album by Magazine, an English post-punk band built around singer and lyricist Howard Devoto, formerly the frontman of the Buzzcocks. He wrote all the lyrics. The music took shape in the preceding year, mainly together with guitarist John McGeoch. The band recorded the album in March and April 1978 at Abbey Road Studios and in a Virgin mobile studio, with John Leckie as producer. The re-recorded version of Shot By Both Sides, the first single, is included, as is The Light Pours Out of Me, which Devoto wrote with Pete Shelley.
The album was released in June 1978 and received a great deal of praise. Critics lauded McGeoch's unpredictable guitar solos and the daring synthesizers of Dave Formula, which gave Devoto's bitter lyrics a grand sound. Real Life is regarded as a groundbreaking post-punk album and later featured on countless lists of the best albums, including in Uncut and Sounds.
