Street Survivors
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Street Survivors was released on 17 October 1977. Three days later Lynyrd Skynyrd's chartered plane crashed. The singer Ronnie Van Zant, the guitarist Steve Gaines and the singer Cassie Gaines were killed, and the other band members were seriously injured. It was the last album with Van Zant and the only one with Steve Gaines. It was recorded twice: first in Miami with Tom Dowd, later in Doraville, Georgia. The second version was released.
Gaines was an important addition. He sings along on You Got That Right, wrote I Know a Little and sings his own blues Ain't No Good Life. What's Your Name became a hit, and That Smell warns against drugs. The original cover, with the band in front of burning buildings, was replaced after the disaster. The album received a great deal of attention and reached number five in the United States.
