Berlin
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The producer Bob Ezrin noticed that the stories in Lou Reed's songs had strong beginnings but never an ending. He wanted to know what had happened to the couple in the song Berlin on Reed's first solo record. This is how Reed's third solo album came about, released in October 1973 by RCA: a concept album about Jim and Caroline, a doomed couple, with themes such as drugs, prostitution, depression, domestic violence and suicide. In The Kids you hear children crying for their mother.
Some of the songs Reed had written earlier, sometimes for the Velvet Underground. The title track was rewritten here for piano alone. The music has been described as art rock and orchestral rock. Rolling Stone called the album a disaster in 1973, it reached number seven in England, and appreciation grew later. In 2007 Reed performed the album on stage, with a band of thirty and twelve choir singers, and that concert was filmed.
