The Fabulous Little Richard

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Fabulous Little Richard · The Fabulous Little Richard is Little Richard's third studio album and the last from his rock and roll period. It was released seventeen months after he left Specialty Records. Richard had returned to his faith and turned away from the music that had made him famous. He would later reverse that decision briefly, but this album ended his peak period.

The record was assembled from outtakes and other leftover recordings, on which Richard sounds somewhat softer than before. On just over half of the tracks a female chorus, the Stewart Sisters, was added to make the music more accessible. The sleeve notes said this came closer to the church singing he had grown up with. Kansas City also contains lyric lines from his own Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, something The Beatles later had to credit when they covered the song.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Kansas City and notice the saxophones and Richard's raw voice above the rhythm of piano and drums.
