The Truth
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Truth · After Pieces of Me, Ledisi took a break to act; she appeared in Leave It on the Floor and Selma, in which she played Mahalia Jackson. In 2013 she returned to music and recorded the album in a few months, faster than ever. She again worked with Rex Rideout, Chuck Harmony and Claude Kelly.
The lyrics come from her own experience of a long relationship that did not work. She called the record more personal than any of her earlier ones. I Blame You uses a sample of the Mary Jane Girls, and Like This samples Black Heat and Doug E. Fresh. The reviews were mostly positive. Like This earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance.
