Spirit of the Boogie

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Spirit of the Boogie is the sixth studio album by Kool & the Gang and was released in 1975. It is a follow-up to Wild and Peaceful from 1973. The instrumental Jungle Jazz uses the same basic rhythm as Jungle Boogie, but lets the players improvise on saxophone, trumpet and flute. There are also references to earlier work: Ancestral Ceremony contains the line making merry music, the name of a song on the 1972 album Good Times. Donald Boyce, who rapped in Jungle Boogie, can be heard again on the title track. There are African influences, and in Caribbean Festival the band plays in a West Indian style, again with plenty of room for improvisation.

The drum rhythm after the fill at the start of Jungle Jazz has been sampled in more than fifty songs, including Pump Up the Volume by M/A/R/R/S.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in Jungle Jazz to the drum rhythm directly after the fill at the start, which has been sampled in more than fifty songs.
